New page

Broad swathe of woodlands reaching from the edge of Blackmouth into the New Hampshire interior. Previously Blackhurst State Park, it was lands owned by Nathaniel Blackhurst, one of the founding fathers of the city and bequested to the city by the last of his line on the condition that it would remain untamed nature for the benefit of the people. It passed into federal hands in 1948 as an attempt by the city council to divest itself of some costs. While the western edge of the city has encroached on the park, much of it remains unspoiled and under the care of the US Parks Service.
