William B. "Bill" Matthis is a senior detective in the homicide division of the Blackmouth City Police Department's 5th Precinct. He was the lead investigator into the strange death of Jacob Ramsey, later investigated the disappearance of Dr Winters as a favour to a friend, and ended up mauled by a raging Atlas moments after her First Change.

Description

Matthis is a tired-looking man approaching retirement age, dressed a decade out of date, with a careworn face and heavy-lidded eyes that see far more than he lets on.

Storytelling Hints

Matthis is worn down by the weight of the world and the impossibility of justice. He clings to the fading embers of hope that he might be able to make a difference, not out of faith in a better world but familiarity and stubborn refusal to let anyone else take up his burdens.

Virtue and Vice: Determination and Exhaustion. Matthis is worn down to will alone, and even that falters from time to time.

Chronicles

Under A Killing Moon

Det. Matthis begrudingly cooperated with Det Whitfield to investigate the strange death of Jacob Ramsey, playing the good cop to his colleague's intensity and threats. Whitfield and Matthis later investigated Winters' own disappearance, suspecting the matter to be connected to Ramsey's death and a brewing conflict between organised crime groups. He was present for the arrest of Atlas, Michael and Jerome at Winters' apartment, and was seriously mauled by Atlas during her subsequent rampage in the 5th precinct.

Connections

  • Cynthia Monroe: Unknown. Investigated Winters disappearance on her request.
  • An unknown man: Visited Matthis at his hospital bed with questions about what happened at the precinct.
